REZA Tsaghati, above, was the hardline Director of Islamic guidance and culture in the northern Gilan province of Iran until a video appearing to show him having sex with a “much younger man” went viral last week.
The Publica reports that that Tsaghati, “a staunch advocate” for mandatory hijab-wearing by Irianian women, has been dismissed from his role at the Gilan Islamic Education and Guidance Department.
The video, which appears to feature Tsaghati walking around nude before engaging in a sex act with the young male, was quickly shared across social media.
Women who refuse to wear a hijab in public in Iran can face up to two years in jail, though repeat offenders can expect to spend more time behind bars if newly-proposed legislation passes.
The video came to light just one day after an Iranian court ordered three women to undergo intensive psychiatric treatment for not wearing the hijab. One of the women, veteran actress Afsaneh Bayegan, was also given the maximum two-year prison sentence as well as a ban on using the Internet.
According to this report, after the video went viral, Iranian authorities swiftly took action, suspending Tsaghati from his position pending a thorough investigation.
The government staunchly denied any prior knowledge of the official’s alleged misconduct.
Homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Iran and carries severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty. The LGBT+ community in Iran often faces threats of violence, intimidation, and abuse, raising serious concerns about their human rights.
Tsaghati, the creator of the cultural center, had been staunchly advocating piety and the wearing of the hijab.
The tape scandal—let’s call it “Gilangate”— sparked outrage among Iranians and triggered widespread discussions.
Critics point out the apparent discrepancy in the way high-ranking officials accused of crimes are treated differently compared to LGBT+ individuals or women accused of not upholding Islamic principles.
